DCS Airspace IFF Identification and Track Identification
DCS Airspace provides two different identification realism levels for live aircraft and units: DCS (Simplified) and REAL (Advanced IFF-based). These modes determine how coalition, callsign, mission number, aircraft type, and other identification information are presented to ATC, AWACS, and GCI controllers.
1. DCS Mode — Standard Identification
DCS Mode provides immediate and absolute identification. Coalition, callsign, mission number, aircraft type, and other available unit information are obtained directly from the DCS World simulation data without applying additional IFF identification restrictions.
This mode is intended for users who want direct access to the identification information provided by the simulator rather than a simulated controller identification process.
2. REAL Mode — Advanced IFF-Based Identification
REAL Mode applies a hierarchical identification process based on IFF status, transponder information, ATO correlation, and manual controller input. The objective is to reproduce a more realistic identification workflow for DCS World air traffic control, AWACS, and GCI operations.
A. Manual Identification
If a controller has manually assigned identification data to a unit in the database, the manual information takes precedence over automatically derived identification data.
Result: The unit information is displayed according to the data defined by the controller.
Success Status: The identification is considered successful when Mode 4 is active or the identification has been explicitly forced by the system.
B. Automated IFF Authentication
When no manual identification override exists, DCS Airspace attempts to authenticate the unit using the available transponder and mission information.
- ATO Match — Mode 3: If the unit's Mode 3 code matches the code assigned in the Air Tasking Order (ATO):
- Full mission information can be displayed, including callsign, aircraft type, and other available mission data.
- The unit remains classified as a Bogey (Unknown) until Mode 4 authentication is available.
- Standard or Controller-Assigned Mode 3: If the Mode 3 code matches a standard code, such as VFR or Emergency, or a code specifically requested by a controller:
- Mode S required: Callsign and aircraft type information obtained from the transponder is displayed only when Mode S is active.
- Mode 4 required: The unit remains a Bogey (Unknown) unless Mode 4 authentication is active.
- Generic Mode 3: If only a generic Mode 3 code is detected:
- The unit remains a Bogey (Unknown) unless Mode 4 is active.
- Mode S can provide additional callsign and aircraft type information when available.
- Link16: Link16-based identification is not currently available.
Simulation Limitations — AI Aircraft and Link16
Current technical limitations in reading the real-time Link16 and IFF state of AI-controlled aircraft prevent the system from determining these states reliably in every situation. DCS Airspace therefore provides a server-side configuration that allows administrators to define how friendly AI aircraft are identified.
Administrators can select the preferred identification behavior through Server Settings.
- Option A — Friendly AI Air Units Identified: All allied AI aircraft are processed as though IFF Mode 4 and Link16 were permanently active.
- Impact: Provides consistent recognition of friendly AI aircraft and prevents identification gaps caused by limitations in the available DCS simulation data.
- Option B — Friendly AI Air Units Unknown: All allied AI aircraft are initially displayed as UNKNOWN (Yellow Square), regardless of their actual mission profile.
- Impact: Provides a more demanding controller environment, requiring manual identification or correlation through available sources such as the ATO, ACO, or visual identification.
Server-wide synchronization: These identification settings are enforced globally for all DCS Airspace clients connected to the server, ensuring that all controllers share the same identification logic and tactical picture.
IFF Identification Modifiers
- Mode 4: The primary authentication mechanism for coalition identification, determining whether a track can be classified as Friendly or Hostile.
- Mode S: Provides callsign and aircraft type information from the aircraft transponder when available.
- Mode 3: Provides the code used for correlation against the Air Tasking Order (ATO) and standard or controller-assigned codes to derive mission-specific information.
- Identification Status: Units that fail the applicable identification checks remain classified as Unknown.
In practice: REAL Mode allows DCS Airspace controllers to work through an identification process based on the same core concepts used in realistic ATC, AWACS, and GCI operations: manual identification, IFF authentication, Mode 3 correlation, transponder information, and mission data from the ATO.
